Stretching across 10 districts and cities of Quang Ngai province, Ly Son - Sa Huynh Geopark has a total area of more than 5,154km2, of which 2,537km2 of land area and 2,617km2 of sea surface area, population of over 1 million people. It integrates interesting geological values, unique culture and diverse biology.
In terms of geology, the Ly Son - Binh Chau volcanic cluster and the vicinity revealed many types of rock and lava typical for different eruptions. Remnants of tectonic activities can be clearly seen in Ly Son Island with many craters turned off, creating interesting natural landscapes such as To Vo gate, Hang Cau wall, Gieng Tien mouth, Thoi Loi mouth. ...
In terms of culture, Ly Son - Sa Huynh Geopark has a dense cultural heritage density, a mixture of many different cultures. That is the old and new Stone Age culture, Sa Huynh culture, Cham Pa culture and Dai Viet culture. Particularly, Sa Huynh culture is most clearly expressed through archaeological relics of Nuoc Trong lake, archaeological relics of Sa Huynh jars, Ma Vuong mound ..., which scientists consider to be 3,000 years ago.
Quang Ngai is considered as the cradle of this ancient culture, reflected through the community of ethnic groups: Kinh, Hre, Cor, Ca Dong ..., creating diverse cultural colors. , mutually transforming. Characteristics of the Dai Viet culture are manifested through the system of temples, pagodas, shrines, or the ritual of worshiping Hoang Sa soldiers on Ly Son island. Sinking in the waters of Binh Chau - Ly Son is a "shipwreck cemetery" with dozens of ancient ships containing various types of artifacts dating from 500 to 1,000 years.
In terms of biodiversity, the waters of Ly Son - Sa Huynh Geopark has over 700 species of flora and fauna, including 4/5 endangered sea turtles in the world, including: leatherbacks, turtles , pineapple tortoise and tortoise. According to Mr. Nguyen Minh Tri, the construction of the Ly Son - Sa Huynh Global Geopark profile was conducted from 2014 to 2019. Up to now, the profile has been completed and is in the process of appraisal. Official results will be announced in April 2021. This is not only an opportunity to promote Quang Ngai’s natural and cultural resources, but also contributes to promoting heritage conservation, tourism development and improving people’s lives.
Parallel to the process of building heritage records, from 2019, Quang Ngai province has continuously held training conferences to introduce and update the progress of building the Ly Son - Sa Global Geopark. Therefore, increasing communication to the community will bring about sustainable development to Ly Son - Sa Huynh Geopark ".
If Ly Son - Sa Huynh Geopark is admitted to the UNESCO Global Geopark Network, it will be the 4th member of Vietnam, along with Cao Bang Non-Water Geopark, Geopark. Dong Van Stone Plateau and Dak Nong Geopark.
